What is the difference between casting and forging?

2025-06-19

Casting and forging are two common metal processing techniques, and their main differences are as follows:

Process principle

Casting: It is a process of pouring liquid metal into the mold cavity, allowing it to cool and solidify, and obtaining castings with certain shapes and properties.

Forging: It is a processing method that uses external forces to cause plastic deformation of metal billets, thereby changing their shape, size, and internal structure to obtain forgings with certain mechanical properties and shapes.

Processing characteristics

Casting: It can manufacture parts with complex shapes, especially those with internal cavities and irregular shapes. It can directly obtain castings that are close to the final shape of the parts, reducing the amount of subsequent processing. However, during the casting production process, factors such as fluidity and shrinkage of liquid metal can easily lead to defects such as porosity, shrinkage porosity, and slag inclusion in castings.

Forging: It can eliminate internal defects such as pores and shrinkage porosity in metal materials, making their internal structure dense and grain refinement, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the metal. Forged parts have high strength, toughness, and wear resistance. However, forging is difficult to manufacture parts with complex shapes, requires high molds, and has relatively high costs.

Applicable materials

Casting: Almost applicable to various metal materials, including cast iron, cast steel, cast aluminum alloy, cast copper alloy, etc. For some high melting point metals and alloys that are difficult to forge, casting is often a feasible processing method.

Forging: mainly suitable for metal materials with good plasticity, such as carbon steel, alloy steel, aluminum alloy, copper alloy, etc. For some brittle materials, such as cast iron, forging technology is generally not suitable.

Application Fields

Casting: widely used in fields such as mechanical manufacturing, automobiles, ships, aerospace, and construction. For example, engine cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, machine tool beds, gearbox housings, etc. are usually produced using casting processes.

Forging: It has important applications in mechanical manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, weapons and other fields. Key load-bearing components such as engine crankshafts, connecting rods, gears, shafts, as well as landing gear and wing beams of aircraft, are mostly manufactured using forging technology.

Production cost

Casting: The cost of molds is relatively low, especially for some parts with large batches and complex shapes. Using casting technology can reduce production costs. But if it is a single piece or small batch production, the initial preparation cost for casting (such as mold manufacturing costs) may be higher.

Forging: Mold manufacturing costs are high, and forging equipment is expensive, with high energy consumption, resulting in higher production costs. However, for some parts with extremely high performance requirements, although forging costs are high, it is still the preferred processing method because it can meet the requirements of the parts' use.
